I'm sure I said this before but I began writing around the third grade...at least that is when I REMEMBER writing stories and turning them into my (favorite) teacher, Mrs. Lowe, who then assigned writing stories to the entire class. I got a typewriter around this time and thought that was the best thing...EVER! But, before the typewriter I wrote my stories on these little tablets my dad gave me.
From the third grade and all through high school I wrote short stories and children's books. After high school and into college I worked more on articles (tons) and young adult novels...I completed one book about a young girl on her way to the white house where a murder takes place...and outlined two other novels for teens.
I don't think I have written a short story since high school. Maybe one or two in college, but they are no longer my thing. And, children's books, which I thought was something I wanted to get into, turned out to not really be my favorite genre either.
I thought I would share with you a story as it was written at the time, meaning I have not edited it(although it drives me NUTS not to).
The story below was written on one of those little tablets, around 1977, when I was about 10 or 11 years old.
THE THREE DONUTS THAT NEVER GOT ALONG
There was 3 donuts: Ann, Jan and Mang. The problem is they never got along. But Ann and Jan were fighting like crazy and they were all sisters till one day...
Jan said to Mang and Ann, "let's go and get some papers so we won't have to hang around each other like sisters."
"I'm hungry" said Mang.
"Oh Mang you're always hungry but I don't want to be sisters; hear me for goodness sake." said Jan.
"We're donuts, we have to be good or else." said Jan.
"What else?" said Mang.
"You'll see at the end of this book...you will see what else will happen to all of us."
"I'm scared" said Mang.
"Oh, don't be afraid Mang" said Ann.
"I hate that name: sisters" said Jan.
"But we're friends aren't we?" said Jan.
"NO! I'm nothing to do with you guys...I see you at the 7-11 store. Bye." said Mang.
"Mang, I still wonder what could happen to us, come on, let's go to the 7-11 store" said Ann.
Ann and Mang and Jan were walking to the store with Jan far ahead till...
A man walked up to them and said, "Ha! Ha! are you guys talking donuts?"
"Yes we are, what are you going to do about it?" said Jan.
"Mang, this is it. Say goodbye this is the else on the other page." said Ann.
"But I have too much sugar and the dentist cost too much" said Mang.
The end.
***********************************************************************
1. Mang? Really? Where in the hell did I come up with THAT name? And I'm pretty sure Jan was inspired by the Brady Bunch.
2. It would appear that I have some serious issues with "sisters" although I didn't have any.
3. I wonder if the hostility Jan had when talking to the strange guy at the 7-11 store when he discovered he had stumbled onto three talking donut sisters, was stemmed from my real life at the time? Hmmmm...
4. I remember at the time thinking how I was going to add suspense and the only way I knew then was to just say it. ("You'll see at the end of this book...what else will happen to us.")
5. That was probably the most confusing ending evah. What the hell did too much sugar and how much the dentist cost have to do with three donut sisters that didn't get along and found themselves talking to strange men at the 7-11 store? Surely being eaten would have been a bigger problem.
Tomorrow I'll share one from high school when I was in the 9th or 10th grade...
LOL, I love it! :o) As for Mang, did you really like mangoes? I bet I could make sense of that ending, but I'm too tired to type it all out. :op
